Though it’s never nice to think about, the reality is that your family may at some point need to make a claim on your policy. Claims are handled directly with the insurer so they will need to get in touch with your policy provider directly.

The good thing is that there is no time limit on making a life insurance claim. This allows your family to focus on higher priorities like funeral arrangements.

Once you have died, your beneficiaries will need to contact your provider with some of the following information:

  • Name of the policyholder (you)

  • Policy number

  • Cause of your death (this will be on your death certificate, supplied by a funeral director or the General Register Office)

  • Their identity and relationship with the you

Providing your insurer has no disputes, the claim should be settled within a month. In some cases, the payout can be delayed if the cause of death is unknown or investigated by the Police.
